BASC was founded on Dec 12, 1945 by the Allied Control Authority.
Service
began in February 1946, under the four powers-flight order No. 4.
Until
the death of Rudolf Hess on 17 August 1987, BASC was in addition to the Spandau
war crimes prison, one of two Inter-Allied organizations of the Cold
War.
24 hours a day, the Berlin Air Safety Center controlled the
safety of all flights in the three flight corridors to and from Berlin, and
Berlin Control Zone, an area of 20 miles in radius around the BASC.
Each of
the four powers in Berlin had a Chief-Controller with a Deputy and
a General Duty-Controller, all positions were held by Air Force
Officers, the Soviets had an additional Interpreter.
The corridors
and the Airspace could be fully used by all Aircraft of the four
Allied Powers. Foreign aircraft needed a special permitfor this. This led
problems by the hijacking of Polish Aircrafts in the 70s and
80s between the Western Allies and the Soviets.
After the reunification
of both German States on 31 December 1990 resigned Service.
Office of the
Berlin Air Safety Center, was the building of the Allied Control Council at
Kleistpark in Berlin.
