The Regiment has its roots in the "Sappörbataljonen" which were raised between 1873 and 1878. The battalion changed its name in 1893 in "Gota Ingenjörbataljon", and in 1902 Göta Engineers Corps when it gained the designation "Ing 2 (2nd Engineer Regiment)". The Corps was converted in 1963 to a Regiment, and was renamed the" Gota Ingenjörregemente". In 1994 the unit was downgraded to a Battalion and in 2000 it was upgraded to a Regiment, and regained its old name. Originally the Unit was garrisoned in Stockholm, Karlsborg before it moved to its present location in Eksjö in 1928.
