Background: The badge was made with the king's permission in the workshops of the silversmith Georg Jensen according to a design by the sculptor and engraver Arno Malinowski and sold nationwide in jewelry and other shops. The badge was issued on the monarch's birthday on September 26th and, due to its simple symbolism, quickly became a sign of resistance against the German occupation that began six months earlier. Due to its economic success, production was not stopped at the end of 1940 and was extended every year until the king's death.
The surplus from the sale went to the king's foundation, the "Kong Christian den Tiendes Fond".
